Venue and Residential Security
Instructor Sele: Protecting a principal at a fixed location — a venue, an office, or their home — requires a different mindset from movement security. The threat knows where the principal will be. Your job is to make that knowledge worthless.
Section 1 — Venue Security
When a principal attends a venue (meeting, event, conference), the advance team must establish: Sterile Corridor — a secured movement path from the vehicle drop-off point to the principal's position inside the venue. Unauthorised persons are removed from this corridor before the principal arrives. The sterile corridor is swept and held — it is not simply observed.
Entry and Exit Points — identify all doors, lifts, and emergency exits; confirm which are locked, monitored, or controlled by venue staff; designate the principal's entry/exit points and confirm with venue security.
Safe Room — a lockable, interior room that can be secured quickly if evacuation is not possible. The CPO identifies this before the principal arrives, confirms it can be locked from the inside, and briefs the principal on its location.
Rally Point — a designated location outside the venue where the team assembles if separated during an emergency. Every team member knows this before the operation begins.
Section 2 — Crowd and Event Security
At large events, the principal faces elevated threat from crowd incidents, gate-rushing, and loss of visibility. The team maintains tighter formations in crowd environments; positions the principal away from the crowd edge and exits; identifies and monitors any individual showing unusual attention to the principal; and plans the evacuation route before the event begins — not during an incident.
In a crowd incident, the CPO's priority is always protect and evacuate the principal — not manage the crowd.
Section 3 — Residential Security
A principal's home is their highest-routine-exposure location. The residential security plan must include perimeter control (fencing, lighting, and CCTV covering all approach routes); single controlled entry/exit point (all access logged and authorised); access management (domestic staff, contractors, and visitors all verified and logged); 24-hour guard presence (at minimum, one guard on the perimeter at all times); safe room (a reinforced interior room with communications capability for the principal to shelter in place if the perimeter is breached); and vehicle security (all vehicles parked in a secured, lit compound; no overnight street parking).
Section 4 — Insider Threat at the Residence
The most underestimated threat to residential security is the insider — domestic staff, contractors, or drivers who have access to the principal's routine, security layout, and habits. Mitigations: screen all domestic staff through SafeHaven's vetting process before employment; change access codes and procedures when staff leave; limit information shared with domestic staff to what is necessary for their role; vary the principal's routine regularly — no predictable departure/arrival times.
