Emergency Response Fundamentals
Instructor Sele: When an emergency happens, the first 60 seconds determine the outcome. You will not have time to think. You will only have time to act on your training. This module builds that training.
Section 1 — The Emergency Response Sequence
In any emergency, follow this sequence: Assess (is the scene safe?), Alert (activate alarms, call 911, notify supervisor), Act (evacuate, first aid, contain), Account (account for all persons), Document (record everything once the immediate emergency is managed).
Section 2 — Fire Response
On discovering smoke or fire: do NOT open doors that are warm to the touch; activate the nearest fire alarm pull station; call emergency services (911); begin evacuation using designated fire escape routes; close doors behind you; meet at the designated assembly point; account for all persons and report to the senior warden.
Section 3 — Medical Emergency
If a person is unresponsive: check the scene is safe; check for response (shout, tap shoulder); call for help (radio + 911); check for breathing; begin CPR if trained and person is not breathing (30 compressions, 2 breaths); do not move a person with a suspected spinal injury.
Section 4 — Active Threat: Run, Hide, Fight
If an armed person is on site: RUN — evacuate immediately if you can do so safely. HIDE — if you cannot run, hide in a locked, barricaded room; silence your phone. FIGHT — only as an absolute last resort when your life is in immediate danger.
