Module 1

The Role of a Security Guard

Instructor Sele: Welcome to Course 1. Before anything else, you need to understand exactly what a security guard is — and what they are not. Your role is defined by law, by ethics, and by the trust your client places in you. Let's begin.

Section 1 — Defining the Role

A security guard is a trained professional hired to protect people, property, and information. In Liberia, security guards operate under civilian authority — you are not a police officer, soldier, or vigilante. Your role is to observe, deter, and report. You are the first line of defence, not the last resort of force.

Your three core functions are: Deter — your visible presence discourages criminal or disruptive behaviour. Detect — your observation skills identify threats before they escalate. Report — your accurate documentation provides the record needed for action.

Section 2 — Guard vs. Police: Understanding the Difference

Security guards in Liberia operate under private authority granted by their employer and client contract. You do not have powers of arrest equal to the Liberia National Police. You may use reasonable force to protect life and property, but only within the limits of the law and your post orders. Never impersonate law enforcement. Never exceed your authority.

Section 3 — Your Duty of Care

You owe a duty of care to everyone on your post — staff, visitors, and even unauthorised persons. This means acting responsibly to prevent foreseeable harm. Courts have found security guards liable for injuries caused by negligent action or inaction. Know your responsibilities.

Key Points
  • A security guard's role is to deter, detect, and report — not to investigate or prosecute
  • Guards operate under civilian, not police, authority
  • You must know the boundaries of your legal powers at all times
  • Your duty of care extends to all persons on your post
  • Exceeding your authority exposes you and SafeHaven to legal liability
Field Note · Instructor Sele

"Early in my career I watched a colleague physically detain a man he suspected of theft — without evidence, without legal grounds. The man sued, and the company lost. Restraint is not weakness. It is professionalism. Know when to act, and when to call the right authority."
